    Who came up with Cheburashka?

It must be said that this simple question (or rather, the answer to it) is not as straightforward as it seems at first glance. The funny hero of literary works, cartoons, concurrently being the official symbol of the Russian national team at the Olympic Games, once became a stumbling block to several legal disputes. We will try to tell about why this happened, and who actually invented Cheburashka in our article.

    Literary character

On the one hand, this is a bookish image. And he came up with his writer Edward Ouspensky. Yellow eyes (like an eagle owl). Round big head (like a hare). The tail is fluffy and short (like a little bear). By the way, in the first editions of the book about Cheburashka and Crocodile Gene, published before the famous cartoon appeared in 1966, the animal looked different. So his image was seen by two other artists, Alfeyevsky and Kalinovsky. In short, you can say: not at all like!

    Cartoon character

The light and unforgettable image of Cheburashka from the Soviet cartoon, published in 1969, was created by animator Leonid Schwartzman (his real name is Israel Aronovich Schwartzman). And after that, in all the other cartoons about Cheburashka, it was this brilliant Soviet artist who created the characters. So the right to the animated animal belongs to him.

    Origin of name

According to the fairy tale of Uspensky, an unknown animal, when transporting along with oranges, strove to “cheburakhnut”, that is, to fall, to put it simply. Hence the name - Cheburashka. In Dahl's dictionary, the notion of “cheburakhnut” is described as: “crash”, “stretch out”, “fall down”. And the word "Cheburashka" means: a pupa of the type of Vanka-vstanka, which, no matter how you throw it, gets to its feet.

    Brand divide

The trials between Ouspensky and Schwartzman began after the collapse of the USSR, in the nineties. The peak occurred in the years 2004-2007. The artist paid attention to the fact that the image of Cheburashka in the first editions of books is significantly different from the cartoon character that was drawn afterwards. And the difference is definitely present. Therefore, it is still reasonable to speak of two different author characters: the cartoon character and the literary character.
