What is Easter?
Every year, on a cool spring morning, solemn and enlightened Orthodox go to church. It is not surprising - Easter! And, actually, what is Easter?
Easter or the Resurrection of Christ is one of the oldest Christian holidays. Christian Easter is established to commemorate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The date of the holiday is calculated based on the lunar-solar calendar, in other words, Easter is a rolling holiday. Easter Sunday falls on the period between March 22 and April 25 and is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox, that is, March 21. Easter Sunday ends preparations for the celebration of Easter. The previous Easter, which began on Wednesday the forty-day (Great) fast, ends on the day before the Easter holiday - on a passionate Saturday. Lent reminds Christians of the forty-day fasting period of Jesus in the desert.
Palm Sunday and Easter are separated by a passionate week. The church service during this period recalls the last earthly days of the life of Christ. Palm Sunday itself is a reminder of the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Great, or passionate Thursday celebrates the last supper. On Good Friday, believers mourn the crucifixion of the Savior on the cross, and the Easter Sunday proclaims his resurrection.
