• Sentimentality

There are people who are able to be moved to tears because of a regular melodrama, and even some touching personal circumstances do not cause emotions. What is the reason for such a different reaction to events? The point is in the personal qualities of a person, more precisely, in one line, which forces to take things too close to the heart and constantly identify themselves with strangers and events, experiencing without a serious reason. This property of the psyche is called sentimentality - heightened susceptibility and dreaminess. In such a person, impressions received from the outside world affect the senses, not the mind and thoughts. So it turns out that a sentimental person tears from reading a book, viewing news or a sad story that happened to strangers.

In a certain sense, this trait is understood as hypersensitivity, which, even in unimportant circumstances, greatly changes a person's mood. Such persons on any occasion show emotion, empathy, tearfulness. They do not remain indifferent even in situations that do not awaken the feelings of other people. Some consider sentimentality a kind of pity, when a person identifies himself with a dysfunctional object and acutely experiences his inherent emotions. However, these concepts should be separated: if you compare pity with a chronic disease, then sentimentality is a short and instant attack of the disease, followed by indispensable relief.

    Is sentimentality good or bad?

Every character trait is better viewed from different angles, from the point of view of the need and value for human life. Therefore, many people ask themselves: is it good or bad to be sentimental? An unequivocal answer is impossible to give, besides, everything in life is relative. However, it is worthwhile to speculate about this, so that everyone makes the right conclusion for themselves.

Is it bad when a person is able to empathize with others? Personalities endowed with this quality, fully share the sadness and joy of others. And it is nice when relatives do not hold back tears at the marriage ceremony or at discharge from the maternity hospital.Perhaps sentimentality in a person is nothing more than a sign of a living, unhardened soul. After all, in modern society, people are closed and alone. It is no longer customary to go on a visit without an invitation, just to help women bring a heavy bag to the house, and many would consider it even superfluous to make a compliment to a colleague. Everyone is fixated on their own problems, and openness and naturalness are considered strange and suspicious.

One thing is clear, that sentimentality is a non-negative character trait, and in some sense important and rare. However, one should not assume that people with such quality are weak. History shows that some famous writers and cruel rulers were sentimental personalities and were touched in certain situations. From this it follows that this character trait does not apply to all spheres of human activity. Someone to tears is touched by animals, although when dealing with people such a person can be firm and even ruthless.

    Excessive sentimentality

As popular wisdom says: everything is good in moderation. It is believed that excessive sentimentality adversely affects the person and the people around them. However, everything is individual and each person determines the boundaries of the manifestation of feelings. For some, the usual thing is to squeal for joy at a long-awaited meeting or cry from a sad film, and this behavior may seem weak to some people, and they will hold back experiences in any circumstances. There are situations when emotions are going wild and the person is no longer able to control them, manifesting it ridiculous and inappropriate. In such cases, we are talking about excessive sentimentality.

As a rule, this property of the psyche is inherent in a greater degree of women. However, the stronger sex also develops sensitivity over time, this is associated with a decrease in male hormones and age-related changes in the body.

Excessive sentimentality can manifest itself in different ways: constantly or in certain situations. If a person is used to keeping emotions in himself, but sometimes gives them an outlet in original ways, this does not harm his state of mind. More difficult for people endowed with supersensitivity, who for some reason can not openly express feelings. For example, when there is a difficult situation at home or at work, and the expression of experiences seems inappropriate. Constant containment of strong emotions inevitably leads to a psychological breakdown at an unexpected moment.People who consider tears to be a manifestation of weakness and who think that ladies and gentlemen always keep a low profile and under no circumstances “lose face” are especially susceptible to this.

Nature is much smarter than man, and she knowingly rewarded some personalities with certain qualities of character. In fact, it is useful for sensitive people to “let off steam”, otherwise a violation of contact with the world of emotions is possible. At the same time, increased sentimentality is manifested by constant tearfulness or painful susceptibility. So, the girl can constantly cry at the slightest trouble, leading to bewilderment and annoyance of loved ones. In an extreme degree, there is even inadequate behavior, when a person is so deeply immersed in extraneous events and problems, deeply feeling and experiencing them, which interferes with normal daily life and leads away from his own goals.

How to get rid of excessive sentimentality

When hypersensitivity violates personal peace, does not allow you to live and sleep soundly, you should study information on how to get rid of excessive sentimentality. This will help to restore contact with the world of emotions and get rid of unnecessary experiences for any reason. We recommend a number of special exercises related to working on the correct and relevant expression of emotions:

"Here and now". Several times during the day, get distracted and ask yourself the question: what do I feel at the moment? And in the mind to sort through all the experienced emotions. It is better to perform such actions as carefully as possible, to delve into and denote minor shades and subtleties of the state of mind.
It is necessary to find out how many words expressing feelings are used by a person in everyday life every day. For the period of time allotted for this exercise, you need to increase this number at least twice.
"Empathic guesses" - fantasies about what others feel. Exercise can be performed anywhere: on the bus, at work, at home. And the household should even ask about the correctness of the assumptions. These actions should involve children of senior school age, it will benefit them: against the background of an exciting lesson, the vocabulary of feelings will also be enriched.

It should be understood that it is not always necessary to suppress emotions: in a circle of loved ones and alone it is better to remove the mask of indifference and express true feelings. You do not have to shy away from close communication, because for people it is extremely important to share with others the moments of sadness and happiness. It will be useful to identify situations that promote the manifestation of strong emotions, present them and concentrate on feelings. This will help to more accurately determine their reactions and understand what to expect in the next moment. Thanks to such training, the suppressed sensations will not accumulate and will not cause another nervous breakdown.

Yet it's nice to meet sincere people, capable of touching emotions and empathy.
