How to treat a tick in a parrot?
Buying an undulating parrot at a pet store or bird market, you will never be sure that you have a completely healthy individual. With good nutrition and proper care, the bird will feel good for a long time. But due to a weakened immunity, symptoms of cnemidocoptosis (a scabies tick) may begin to appear. This disease most often affects wavy parrots and is extremely dangerous for them, so it’s worth to know more about this insidious disease.
The causative agents of the disease are scabies mites, which are transmitted from sick to healthy birds through various accessories or with food. These parasites are not dangerous to humans and other mammals.
How is the disease manifested
Itch mite lives on open areas of the body of feathered animals - the legs and beak are most often affected. Parasites mechanically destroy the skin of the bird, which leads to pathological changes on the beak and limbs, and in the advanced stage more eyelids and cloaca are affected. In addition, intoxication of the whole organism occurs.
A characteristic symptom of the disease is the appearance of lime build-up on the skin, which inside have a porous structure. The skin begins to peel off and flake off. A parrot can stand on one paw for a long time, while clearing the other with its beak.
The behavior of the feathered pet changes, it is tormented by persistent severe itching, it can pull out its feathers, which will lead to the colonization of the uncovered skin areas with mites.
The parrot's behavior changes, it becomes sluggish, refuses to eat.
Get rid of parasites
One aversectin ointment is considered one of the most effective and inexpensive drugs for treating cnemidocoptosis. To apply the medicine, they take a cotton swab and rub the ointment well into the affected areas. It is necessary to ensure that the tool does not fall into the eyes, nostrils, plumage and beak feathered pet.
Additionally, it is worth looking at the skin adjacent to the affected areas. If necessary, the growths formed there should be treated with the preparation.
Apply aversectin ointment 3-4 times with an interval of 5 days. Repeat the course after 10 days.
Another equally effective drug for treatment is petroleum jelly, which blocks the access of oxygen to parasites, as a result of which they die. However, this medicine does not affect the eggs of the mites, so over time, a relapse of the disease is possible. Vaseline oil is harmless to the bird's organism and does not cause allergic reactions. Apply it twice a day on the affected areas until complete recovery, avoiding contact with the eyes, nostrils and bird feathers. However, in severe forms, an overseas ointment is used.
Before and after treatment, it is necessary to thoroughly disinfect the cell with neostomazan. One ampoule is diluted with 400 ml of water and the bird’s habitat is processed with all the objects inside it: poles, swings, drinking trough, etc. In a diluted solution, the cage and accessories are left for 2-3 hours. After that they are washed several times with water, at the end they are filled with boiling water and dried. Crayons, mineral stones and sepia must be thrown away, as they may contain the eggs of ticks and the parasites themselves.
To strengthen immunity to your pet, vitamin preparations are recommended.
After all the procedures performed, your feathered friend will quickly get better, and will again delight you with his healthy appearance, good appetite and cheerful chirping.
