# How to calculate the percentage of the number?

In order to find out how to calculate the percentage of a number, you first need to figure out what percentage is.

Percentage is one hundredth of something whole. The letter is indicated by a%. If we need to calculate the percentage of any number, then we take this number as 100%.

There are several ways to calculate the percentage of a number. Let us consider specific examples:

## First way

First we will find out what is the value of 1% of a specific number, and then multiply this value by the number of percent given in the task.

- Example: find 20% of the number 60.
- Solution: First we find out how much will be 1% of the number 60. If 60 is 100%, then 1% = 60/100 = 0.6. Now multiply the value of 1% = 0.6 by the 20% we need. You can count in a column or on a calculator. 0.6 * 20 = 12.
- Answer: 12.

## Second way

Instead of dividing by 100 and then multiplying by the number of required percentages, we can immediately multiply our given number by the decimal fraction, putting the number of percentages we need to find, after 0 with a comma.

- Example: find 20% of 80.
- The solution: 80 * 0.20 = 16.
- Answer: 16.

## Third way

close to the first two. For some, it may seem simpler. First, multiply the number given to us by the number of required percentages, and then divide by 100.

- Example: find 40% of 70.
- The solution: 70 * 40 = 2800, 2800/100 = 28.
- Answer: 28.

## Fourth way

Proportion. We introduce the variable x.

Example:

- Find 30% off 80.

Decision:

- 100% = 80,
- 30% = x.

We make the equation by multiplying the values crosswise

- 100 x = 80 * 30
- x = (80 * 30) / 100
- x = 24.
- Answer: 24.

## Fifth way

You can calculate the percentage of the number on the calculator. We take a calculator and enter the specified number, then multiply it by the number of necessary percentages and instead of the sign "=" we press the sign "%".

- Example: find 25% of 80
- Solution: dial 80 * 25% - the number 20 appears on the calculator.
